Eyelids
This animal has eyelids, unlike true snakes, which have no eyelids.
Regenerated (re-grown) tails
Like some other lizards, the sheltopusik is able to break off a section of its tail when a predator attacks and then the tail will grow back.

Habitat/Range
Open forests and sun-exposed fields of southeastern Europe and the Caucasus to central Asia
Wild Diet
Snails, Insects, Small birds, and Small rodents
Predators
Large birds and Small mammals
Reproduction
Sheltopusiks breed in late spring and lay up to 12 eggs. The eggs take approximately 6 weeks to hatch.
Conservation
STABLE
Still relatively common throughout parts of its range.
