Shell coloration
Many box turtles have yellowish markings on the top of the shell which camouflage the turtles in their forest habitat.
Eye color
Sex can often be determined by eye color - males have red eyes and females have brown or yellowish eyes.

Habitat/Range
Woodlands and grasslands of northeastern Massachusetts, south to Georgia and west to Michigan, Illinois, and Tennessee
Wild Diet
Vegetation, Insects, Worms, and Other invertebrates
Predators
Small mammals (eggs) and Humans (adults)
Reproduction
Usually 3 to 8 eggs are laid in early summer. The eggs hatch in 2-1/2 to 3 months.
Conservation
SPECIAL CONCERN
Classified as a "Species of Special Concern" because of habitat destruction and collection for the pet trade.
