Shinisaurus crocodilurus
Powerful tail
Similar to a crocodile, this lizard has a powerful tail that enables it to swim in its semi-aquatic habitat.
Basking behavior
These animals often bask on logs overhanging the water. They dive into the water at the first hint of trouble.

Habitat/Range
Fairly dense woodlands in the mountains of Guangxi Province, China
Wild Diet
Fish, Tadpoles, Insects, and Snails
Predators
Birds, Snakes, and Humans
Reproduction
Up to 12 young are live-born after a gestation period of approximately 8 months.
Conservation
THREATENED
Protected throughout its range. However, this species is still widely used in traditional Chinese medicine and the entire wild population may consist of fewer than 2,000 individuals. The Detroit Zoo currently maintains the North American Regional Studbook for this animal.
