Snow Celebration at the Belle Isle Nature Zoo

To Sunday, January 28 2007 - 2:00pm

The Belle Isle Nature Zoo will host its first-ever Snow Celebration on Saturday and Sunday, January 27 and 28, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The two-day event will include snowshoeing lessons, music, storytelling, crafts, and nature programs.  Admission to the Zoo and all events is free.

Saturday, January 27

10:00 a.m. – Snowshoeing for Beginners.  Snow permitting, Belle Isle Nature Zoo Manager Mike Reed will give snowshoeing lessons.  Snowshoes will be provided or guests may bring their own.
 
11:00 a.m. – Groove.  The University of Michigan percussion group will perform comedy skits and music on discarded trash items.

11:00 a.m. – Nature Crafts: Snowflakes.  Visitors will learn how different types of snowflakes are formed and how to make their own.

12:00 noon – History of Belle Isle.  Janet Anderson, author of Belle Isle, will present a slide show and Q and A.

1:00 p.m. – Snowbound Bugs.  A nature interpreter will guide an indoor/outdoor tour looking for signs of winter insect life.

Sunday, January 28

10:00 a.m. – Snowshoeing for Beginners.  Snow permitting, Belle Isle Nature Zoo Manager Mike Reed will give snowshoeing lessons.  Snowshoes will be provided or guests may bring their own.

11:00 a.m. – Story Time.  A nature interpreter will read stories by an indoor fire. 

12:00 noon – Birds of Prey.  Representatives from the Howell Nature Center will present some of the largest predator birds in North America and talk about bird behavior.

1:00 p.m. – Snow Day.  A nature interpreter will give a presentation on why snow is important to animal life.

Other organizations providing activities and demonstrations include: Huron-Clinton Metroparks Mobile Learning Unit, Belle Isle Nature Zoo Camera Club, Detroit Department of Parks and Recreation, Scripps Whitcomb Belle Isle Conservatory, Friends of Belle Isle, Detroit Historical Museum, Monteith Detroit Public Library, Junior League of Detroit, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Pewabic Pottery, and the Detroit educational cable program “Homework Hotline.”
