The Detroit affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will hold its first annual PurpleStride Detroit 5K walk to raise money for pancreatic cancer research. The event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Detroit Zoo beginning at 8 a.m.
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, yet it is the most under-funded, under-recognized and least-studied of the leading cancer killers. Currently, less than 2 percent of the National Cancer Institute’s federal research funding is allocated to pancreatic cancer.
There is no cost to register in advance for PurpleStride Detroit. Visit www.pancan.org/purplestridedetroit09 to register, create a team or donate. Registration on the day of the event is $20. There is no fee for survivors or children. Registration includes free parking and admission to the Detroit Zoo. Participants who raise a minimum of $100 by Sept. 6 will receive an event t-shirt. The online registration deadline is 5 p.m. EST on Sept. 21.
