The African Grasslands in the Zoo’s northwest corner provides an environment for learning about the diverse, adaptable species of the vast African Savannah. Warthogs made their debuts at the Zoo in the summer of 2007, help tell the story of this important biome. They are joined by the reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, lesser kudus, white rhinoceroses, African birds and aardvarks.
An exciting interactive feature of the African Grasslands is the Giraffe Encounter. From late spring through early fall, Zoo guests can hand-feed special treats to the reticulated giraffes several times a week. The raised wooden deck elevates visitors to eye level with the giraffes, allowing close encounters with these gentle animals.
