QUIZ ANSWERS:
1. Gorillas live in groups called _______?
Answer: D. troops. Gorillas are communal animals and non-territorial. They live in groups called troops that generally consist of 1 to 4 adult males, some juvenile males, several adult females and their young.
2. What are older adult males sometimes referred to as?
Answer: B. silverbacks. Older males are referred to as "sliverbacks" because of the massive silvery-grey areas they develop on the midsection of their backs as they get older. Juvenile male gorillas are sometimes referred to as "blackbacks."
3. Gorillas usually walk using all four limbs. This is known as ___________?
Answer: A. knuckle-walking. Gorillas and chimpanzees have a distinctive walk called knuckle-walking. They most often walk this way because they have limited bipedal (two-footed) movement because of their short legs. The walk derived its name (obviously) because they walk on their knuckles, not on their palms.
4. Gorillas can often be seen picking through another gorilla's fur. What is the name of this behavior?
Answer: B. grooming. Gorillas establish and reinforce bonds by social grooming. A gorilla will groom another by combing through its fur with its fingers and teeth. This allows close contact and touch between the animals, as well as keeping each other free of parasites.
5. Besides beating their chests and making loud grunting noises, what other behavior does the gorilla use to frighten away its enemies?
Answer: C. charging. When a gorilla (usually a silverback) feels threatened or is forced to defend his territory, he will charge. The gorilla's charge is usually only a bluff, intended to drive away the threat, not engage with it. |
