1. This animal's scientific name is Ursus americanus. Can you guess which animal it is?
Answer: D. American black bear. The Genus name, Ursus, tells us this animal is a bear. The species name, americanus, usually describes the area where the organism is found, the name of the person who found it, or what it looks like. Not necessarily what kind of organism it is.
2. The Linnaean system of classification was invented by which scientist?
Answer: B. Carolus Linnaeous. An 18th Century Swedish scientist, Carolus Linnaeus, invented a system of classifying and naming plants and animals that is still used today.
3. Invertebrates refers to animals without one of these. What is it?
Answer: A. A backbone or spinal column. Common invertebrate animals include starfish, earthworms and octopus. The counterparts to these animals are vertebrates, or animals with backbones.
4. Under the scientific naming of an organism (binomial nomenclature), which part is named first?
Answer: C. Genus. The first name, the Genus, is capitalized; members of a genus are closely related. The second name, the species, gives each type of plant or animal its own unique name. Both names are usually printed in special lettering: italic.
5. Which scientist provided us with the theory of evolution?
Answer: B. Charles Darwin. Charles Darwin provided conclusive evidence that evolution of life forms has occurred. He was also the first to propose natural selection as the mechanism responsible for these changes. |
