1. Can you guess what aquatic animal this is?
Answer: A. Hippo-potamus. Despite their large size and awkward appearance, these animals move gracefully through the water. Greeks named the animal hippopotamus, which translates to "river horse", though it is more closely related to the pig family.
2. Which of these animals has earned the nickname "sea cow"?
Answer: D. Manatee. These animals can grow up to 13 feet in length and weigh as much as 1,300 pounds. To accommodate its large size the manatee spends much of its time grazing on underwater vegetation, earning its nickname, "sea cow".
3. Which of these animals is the largest in the sea?
Answer: B. Blue whale. The blue whale is not only the largest animal in the sea, its the largest animal in the world. They can grow as long as 100 feet and weigh as much as 200 tons. That's about as much as 30 elephants weigh!
4. Which member of the weasel family likes to play in the water?
Answer: C. Otter. Otters can often be seen playing in rivers, lakes or oceans. They chase one another underwater, play with sticks and leaves on the water's surface, and dive for pebbles. Some river otters have been seen playfully tugging at beavers' tails.
5. Which group of birds has given up flying for swimming?
Answer: B. Penguins. Although penguins don't fly, they did evolve from flying birds. With wings that have evolved into stiffened flippers, penguins are excellent swimmers. As the most aquatic of all birds, some penguins may spend up to three quarters of their life in the sea. |
