Where do zoo animals come from?
Approximately 99% of zoo mammals are acquired from other zoos around the country and the world. Some of these species reproduce readily in captivity, and the young animals are usually more than welcome at other nationally accredited zoos. Generally, animals are donated as a gift or loaned to the receiving institution.
Some, but very few, animals are acquired in several other ways. Smuggled or otherwise illegally obtained wildlife is occasionally confiscated by wildlife authorities, who sometimes send these animals to the Zoo. As a member of The Association of Sanctuaries (TAOS), The Detroit Zoological Society works closely with humane and animal rescue assocations to help find good homes for abused, neglected, or confiscated wildlife. Such animals are not necessarily kept at our Zoo, but may be relocated to another accredited animal sanctuary. "Adopt"-an-Animal By symbolically "adopting" an animal at the Detroit Zoo through the "adopt" an animal program, you are helping us care for that animal. Your support lets us provide veterinary treatment, improve exhibits, and sponsor educational classes, seminars, and research expeditions. More importantly, your assistance makes the Zoo’s participation in the Species Survival Plans possible. |
