Belle Isle Nature Zoo to Welcome Colorful New Residents |

DETROIT, Mich., February 22, 2010 – The spiders at the Belle Isle Nature Zoo will soon have some very colorful, very hairy and not-so-itsy-bitsy roommates. Eight tarantulas – with names such as cobalt blue, pink-toed and Goliath bird-eating – will be given sanctuary at the Nature Zoo’s Tiny Wonders exhibit after being seized in a raid on a Texas exotic animal dealer in December.

Detroit Zoo Offers $2 Off Admissions During Presidents' Week |

ROYAL OAK, Mich., February 11, 2010 – The Detroit Zoo is offering a discount of $2 off all regular-price admissions in recognition of Presidents’ Week February 15-19, 2010. Reduced prices are $9 for adults 15 to 61, $7 for senior citizens 62 and older, and $5 for children ages 2 to 14; children under 2 are free. The discount is available only with a coupon, which can be downloaded and printed off the Zoo’s Web site (visit www.detroitzoo.org and click on the Presidents’ Week link on the home page).

Animals Rescued in Texas Arrive at Detroit Zoo |

ROYAL OAK, Mich., February 5, 2010 – The lives of nearly 27,000 animals seized in a raid on a Texas exotic animal dealer December 15 are no longer in limbo following a judge’s ruling that the animals will not be returned to U.S. Global Exotics. Hundreds of the surviving rescued animals are now at their new home at the Detroit Zoo.

ROYAL OAK, Mich., January 13, 2010 – Detroit Zoo attendance was 1,271,663 in 2009, compared to 1,114,221 in 2008, a 14 percent increase. This represents the fourth consecutive year-to-year increase in attendance – which has exceeded one million since 2006 – and the second-highest recorded attendance.

Detroit Zoo Helps Care for Tens of Thousands of Animals Rescued in Texas Cruelty Seizure |

ROYAL OAK, Mich., January 12, 2010 – The Detroit Zoo is providing expert assistance in the care of more than 27,000 animals seized last month in Arlington, Texas, from U.S. Global Exotics, an international exotic animal dealer. Six Zoo animal curators and supervisors have been working in Dallas for the past four weeks to help triage, identify and care for the confiscated animals, many seriously ill, at a temporary rescue facility.
