Summer Fun for the Wild Child
Detroit Zoo's Summer Safari camps start June 23
ROYAL OAK, Mich., May 30, 2014 – Kids can get out of the house and into the wild this summer with Summer Safari camps at the Detroit Zoo. From June 23 through Aug. 15, 2014, children in kindergarten through eighth grade will discover the wonders of nature and wildlife through hands-on activities, games and crafts. This year's program offers two new themes: Zookeeper Camp and Conservation Camp.
Zookeeper Camp will familiarize campers with the knowledge and skills required to be a zookeeper and provide the opportunity to learn about animal health, behavior, nutrition and welfare. Conservation Camp will allow campers to explore the role they can play in conservation, from helping animals in their own backyard to saving endangered species around the world.
"Our new programs are designed to help kids experience the wonder and 'wow' of the Detroit Zoo and walk away with a closer connection to animals," said Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) Chief Program Officer Diane Miller. "Dividing the camps by grade level will allow our campers to have a new experience to look forward to year after year."
Weeklong full-day camp session prices are $250 for members and $270 for non-members. Weeklong half-day camp sessions – for kindergarten campers only – are $130 for members and $140 for non-members. Weeklong morning and afternoon sessions can be paired for full-day experiences.
Busy parents can drop daytime campers off early or pick them up late to enjoy before- and after-camp activities. Early Bird drop-off starts at 7:30 a.m. and Late Owl pick-up runs until 5:30 p.m. Costs range from $6 for a single session to $60 for Monday through Friday mornings and afternoons.
In addition to Zookeeper Camp and Conservation Camp, Summer Safari is introducing an animal welfare workshop for students in ninth through 12th grade. The program will allow campers to join the DZS's Center for Zoo Animal Welfare team and experience the Detroit Zoo through the eyes of the animals.
