Watch the Lions Play on Super Bowl Sunday

ROYAL OAK, Mich., February 3, 2010 – The lions will play on Super Bowl Sunday – along with the tigers, snow monkeys, wolverines and other Detroit Zoo residents – so the Zoo is offering a discount of $2 off all regular-price admissions on February 7, 2010.

Reduced prices are $9 for adults 15 to 61, $7 for senior citizens 62 and older, and $5 for children ages 2 to 14; children under 2 are free.  The discount is available only with a coupon, which can be downloaded and printed off the Zoo’s Web site (visit the Super Bowl page and click on the Super Bowl Coupon Link).

Before the big game, visitors can check out the Japanese macaques, or snow monkeys, who can often be seen basking in the warm steam from their hot tub on a frigid day.   The Amur tigers, wolverines, red pandas, takins, elk and bison also adapt well to cold weather.  Even the lions, native to warmer climates, can be found sunning themselves on bright winter days.  Sunday’s forecast calls for sunshine and temperatures in the mid 20s.

Indoor experiences at the Zoo include the Arctic Ring of Life, Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden, National Amphibian Conservation Center, Penguinarium, Holden Museum of Living Reptiles, Great Apes of Harambee, Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat and Meerkat Digs.  The giraffe, white rhino, lemur and farm animal habitats also have indoor viewing areas.  Special maps are available at the admission gate to help guests plan their winter visit to the Detroit Zoo.
