Detroit Zoological Society Announces New Board Members
ROYAL OAK, Mich., September 19, 2008 – At the annual meeting of the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) held September 16, 2008, at the Detroit Zoo, the membership approved the following slate of candidates for a three-year term of board service: Thomas J. Lewand, Albert L. Lorenzo and Victor Martin.

Lewand is in his 14th season with the Detroit Lions organization, currently serving as executive vice president and chief operating officer.  He is the immediate past chairman of the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau and serves on the boards of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, Detroit Economic Growth Corporation and Parade Company.  Lewand has been recognized twice by Sports Business Journal as one of the top “40 Under 40” sports executives in the United States, and was also named to the Crain’s Detroit Business list of “40 Under 40” top business people in the Detroit area. 

Lorenzo is president emeritus of Macomb Community College (MCC) which, under his leadership, grew to become one of the nation’s largest community colleges and the leading grantor of associate degrees in Michigan.  Before becoming president of MCC, he held positions as the college’s vice president for business, controller, business manager and assistant professor of business.  Lorenzo currently serves as an executive-in-residence at Oakland University.  He also serves on the boards of the Michigan Education Trust and Citizens State Bank, and is chairman of the board of the Henry Ford Macomb Hospitals.

Martin is president and co-owner of Best Western Sterling Inn Banquet & Conference Center.  He is a founding member of the Detroit Sports Commission and served as hotel liaison to the NFL for Super Bowl XL.  Martin serves as treasurer of the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau, chairs that organization’s Owner Advisory Committee and is a member of its Budget and Audit Committee.  He is also a member of the Sterling Heights Brownfield Committee and Sterling Heights Recreation Committee.

The following DZS Board members were re-elected for another three-year term: Lynn Ford Alandt, Linda Wasserman Aviv, Burton D. Farbman, Jennifer Fischer, Ruth R. Glancy, Ira J. Jaffe, George G. Johnson, Sandra E. Pierce, Richard B. Platt and John G. Sznewajs.
