Amani - Detroit Zoo Update
Amani at one week, December 2008.
DNA tests to determine the sex of aardvark Amani arrived in early April...and it's a girl!  Amani (Swahili for "peace") was born at the Detroit Zoo on December 8, 2008, to parents, Rachaael and Mchimbaji.  The 23-inch infant arrived pink and hairless, weighing 3 pounds, 10 ounces, with ears measuring 4 inches.

At 10 weeks old, Amani was no longer naked to the world, sporting a sleek, gray coat and enormous, pointed ears (see photo dated Februray 16, 2009).  The young aardvark now weighs about 70 pounds.  Adult aardvarks can weigh from 90 to 145 pounds and grow 5 to 6 feet in length.

Amani can be seen outdoors near the giraffe habitat.
