Park Safety Officers are responsible for providing access control, building checks, crowd control, courteous service and accurate information to Zoo external and internal customers on a daily basis. Vehicle and foot patrols are conducted on a daily basis. You will be required to work outside in inclement weather, and your work schedule will be based on the needs of the Detroit Zoological Society.
Minimum Requirements:
1. Must be at least 21 years of age.
2. High school graduation or GED with at least 1 year experience as a security officer.
3. Must be capable of working without close supervision to a consistently high standard and have a strong commitment to safety and excellent customer service.
4. Knowledge of standard business practices and proper phone etiquette.
5. Ability to operate a personal computer and other standard office equipment.
6. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with employees and guests, both orally and in writing.
7. A willingness to learn.
8. Must be able to work varied hours and extended shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings.
9. Valid State of Michigan driver’s license required.
Essential Responsibilities:
1. Be alert, professional, and courteous at all times.
2. Arrive to work on time and in uniform.
3. Respond to visitor emergencies according to Detroit Zoological Institute protocols and procedures.
4. Meet, greet and assist guests as necessary.
5. Verify that all employees, contractors and vendors have the proper identification and authorization to access Park grounds.
6. Monitor vehicles that are on park grounds.
7. Perform dispatch and gate control duties as necessary.
8. Patrol the park, parking areas, administrative and behind the scenes areas on foot, bicycle, golf cart or motor vehicle.
9. Monitor and control the flow of traffic throughout the park.
10. Conduct Safety inspections and investigations.
11. Perform crowd control during special events, during emergencies and during normal business operations.
12. Complete incident reports and assist with accident/incident investigations.
13. Take and disperse information as necessary.
Working Conditions:
• Work is performed both outdoors and indoors with exposure to seasonal and extreme weather conditions.
• Able to perform essential job functions which typically involve communicating with large groups of zoo visitors.
• Able to handle emergency or stressful situations in calm and authoritative manner while maintaining proper employee and guest relations to ensure a safe environment.
• Walking and standing for long periods of time.
• Stooping, bending, and kneeling.
• Lifting 50 pounds up to the shoulder.

Rate of Pay: $9.00/hour
