The Park Operations Internship is an un-paid, for credit only, intern position at the Detroit Zoological Society. The Intern will work in the Park Operations Division to assist the Operations Team with the administration and management of multiple operational facets of a large facility: safety, security, information technology, maintenance, construction, grounds, landscaping, etc.
This internship will focus on hands-on experiences and involve all facets of Operations. This is a tremendous learning opportunity for a student who is interested in gaining experience that will help them understand the needs, processes and functions of a zoo, amusement facility, or mass-gathering venue.
A minimum commitment of two days per week for six weeks is required, though exact dates and times are flexible. Longer commitments with more frequent work are desired.
Responsibilities:
1. Assist with normal Operations activities; project tracking, physical facility status, reporting, coordination.
2. General office duties as they relate to the daily operations of the department, including but not limited to: data entry, copying, filing, faxing, responding to requests for information, phone inquiries.
3. Will work directly with the Director of Operations, and indirectly with the Facilities Superintendent, Facilities Managers, Chief of Security, Director of Technology, and others.
Qualifications:
1. College majors: Non-Profit Management, Zoo and Aquarium Management, Hotel-Institutional Management, Industrial Hygiene, Emergency Management, or other technical or operational major.
2. Junior or Senior level college students enrolled in the appropriate majors.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required
3. Excellent organization and communication skills.
4. Creative, friendly, enthusiastic, and detail-oriented.
5. Ability to meet deadlines and work in a timely manner.
Credit:
Students must provide information from their school on internship requirements as well as the certification documentation necessary to receive credit.
Interns must comply with and follow all employment requirements of the Society.
