Curator of Amphibians

 

Join the excitement at the Detroit Zoo as the Curator of Amphibians. You will be a part of the Zoo experience for our guests and visitors as you oversee the conservation programs, animal care practices and research at the National Amphibian Conservation Center. This critical position supports, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society and is charged with maintaining and building on the reputation of the NACC by developing programs and staff.

Requirements:
1. Provide direction and oversight of all Amphibian Department operations, including animal care, staff training, maintenance, guest interaction activities, special events and other projects as needed.
2. Develop, implement and oversee in situ and ex situ conservation programs.
3. Develop, conduct, coordinate and oversee research at the National Amphibian Conservation Center.
4. Supervise and evaluate subordinates and participate in recruitment and selection of Amphibian Department staff.
5. Oversee development of staff work schedules to ensure optimum care of animals and exceptional conditions for guests.
6. Develop amphibian components of Conservation and Animal Welfare Master plans.
7. Propose acquisition and disposition of animals; coordinate animal health and other medical procedures with veterinary staff.
8. Prepare, submit and monitor budgets as required.
9. Maintain records and provide written and verbal reports as required.
10. Contribute to strategic and other long-term planning initiatives.

Qualifications:
Qualifications for the Curator of Amphibians include a Bachelor’s degree in zoology or a closely related discipline, with strong preference given for an advanced degree; four years experience in the care and management of captive wildlife; plus three years of management experience.  Preference is given for experience in a curatorial, education or research capacity. A valid State of Michigan Driver’s license required. Must have strong quality decision making and problem solving skills; excellent verbal / written communications, listening and time management skills.  The Curator of Amphibians may be required to work weekends and nights. To perform these jobs successfully, individuals must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job. 


Work Environment:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to all seasonal  weather conditions, with frequent exposure to and contact with dangerous animals, with risk of zoonotic disease transmission (Hepatitis B, Herpes B, Tuberculosis, Salmonella and others), and with exposure to computer monitors.  Must be able to work weekends and nights.
