Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Detroit Zoo! Please carefully review the following information about our teen volunteer program. Should you choose to apply, completed application packets are due to the Zoo
by Wednesday, April 30, 2014.
The Detroit Zoological Society is recruiting for a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program in which teen volunteers will assist during the Zoo’s Summer Safari Camp. Responsibilities include assisting with groups of 10-12 youth (Kindergarten-8th grade) on tours throughout the Zoo, administering craft projects and interacting with staff and guests. Camp is held Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is held mainly outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. “Volunteens” must be able to stand for long periods of time and be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
An appropriate candidate for the CIT program should have the following qualifications
- Mature teens, age 16 or 17 only
- Experience working with youth preferred
- Interest in concepts and issues of biology, environmental or life science and similar disciplines
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, both orally and in writing
- Access to reliable transportation to and from the Detroit Zoo
While the CIT program will help the Detroit Zoo in creating an enhanced experience for Summer Safari Campers, it will also benefit the teen volunteer. CITs will gain teaching and leadership experience, learn problem solving skills, learn to work with a team and gain experience working in a professional setting. They may also develop a broader knowledge of biology, environmental and life sciences.
Because the Volunteen will be working directly with youths and will be representing the Detroit Zoo on a daily basis, we have established an intensive selection process to become a part of the CIT program. The following items must be completed and returned together to the Zoo by Wednesday, April 30, 2014.
- CIT Application completed by the teen
- Two References from a teacher or other community leader (scout leader, spiritual leader, counselor, etc.) using form provided
- Proof of Age (acceptable forms include a copy of a birth certificate, state ID or school record)
If you are selected to proceed, you will be contacted to schedule an interview with Detroit Zoo staff. We anticipate a large volume of applicants for a limited number of positions. If selected to join the CIT program, the teen must, without exception, attend the scheduled training on Monday, June 16 from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and must volunteer for at least two of the week-long camp sessions.
The CIT program is a big commitment. We ask that all teens and their parents seriously consider the time and dedication that comes with this program before applying.
Thank you for your interest in our CIT program! Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.
