The lion exhibit was one of the first exhibits presented at the grand opening of the Detroit Zoological Park in 1928. The original exhibit featured indoor viewing where visitors saw the animals through bars, and outdoor viewing which was moated so visitors had unobstructed view of the lions.

In the early 1980's, the lion exhibit area went through a major renovation which converted the indoor viewing area to a more versatile off-exhibit holding facility. The same moated enclosure is present today.

The lions enjoy the numerous vantage points on their simulated cliff-face, from which they can survey large areas of the zoo.
