Veterinary Case Studies

Veterinary Specialists
While zoo veterinarians are experienced in many different aspects of medicine with many different species, they often rely on veterinary and human medical specialists for more difficult procedures. The following are some examples of the generous people (such as the medical doctors from Beaumont Hospital pictured to the right) who help us take care of the animals at the zoo.

You want me to bleed what???
One of the most important diagnostic tools in veterinary medicine is blood analysis. However, with the wide variety of animals in a zoo, it can often be a challenge collecting it!

Preventative Medicine
Preventative medicine is a very important part of the day to day care of the animals in the zoo. Much like an routine visits to your doctor, animals at the zoo also receive routine health care in order to keep them in top physical shape. This is one of the reasons animals in zoos tend to live much, much longer than their wild counterparts.
