Ocellated mountain viper

Vipera wagneri
Very little is known about the natural history of this small rare snake. It can reach a length of 3 ft., although most specimens are slightly smaller. It inhabits rocky, mountainous habitats, and gives birth to a few live-born young each year or two. Because of its rarity in the wild and in captivity, this species is the subject of a North American studbook which tracks the genetic background of every specimen in North American zoos.
