Testudo kleinmanni
A highly protected species, the Egyptian tortoise is also one of the smallest tortoises in the world. Adult males average 4 inches in length, while females are somewhat larger. They inhabit dry sandy or stony areas, and specimens find shelter under flat stones, in crevices, or in rodent burrows during the hottest parts of the day. One-to-three eggs are laid per clutch, and females may lay up to three clutches per year. Eggs take 70-119 days to hatch.
