Ursus maritimus
Streamlined body
Polar bears often swim long distances in open oceans and between ice floes.
White fur
The hollow hairs help collect solar heat to warm the bears. Sometimes algae grows inside the hair and makes the bear look green.

Habitat/Range
Tundra and seacoasts of Russia, Norway, Greenland, Canada, and Alaska
Wild Diet
Seals, Walruses, Dead Whales, Fish, Crabs, Birds, Rodents, Reindeer, Eggs, Berries, and Vegetation
Predators
Male polar bears (cubs) and Humans (adults)
Reproduction
Females store body fat before entering a maternity den dug into the snow. Cubs are born blind and helpless and weigh less than 2 pounds. They will stay with the mother for 2-1/2 years.
Conservation
SPECIAL CONCERN
Considered a species of "special concern" since 1965, polar bears receive different protection in different parts of the world. In Russia and Norway they are totally protected.
