May's Animal Attraction
Ten-year-old North American river otter Whisker has been a Detroit Zoo resident since 2009 and last year gave birth to three pups, fathered by 7-year-old Lucius. According to animal care staff most familiar with her, Whisker was an excellent first-time mom and did everything flawlessly, including teaching her young ones how to swim. Her pups have since gone to other zoos with breeding recommendations. Whisker and Lucius, along with 12-year-old female Stormy, can be seen showing off their aquatic skills at the Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat. The naturalistic environment features a 5,900-gallon pool with a waterfall and waterslide, and the habitat is designed so that small children can view the otters at eye level as they swim. Whisker in particular seems to enjoy interacting with visitors through the glass.
